What can you to help build healthy youth in Newburyport? Join a Beacon project or help get one started! We need your support and involvement to increase assets in our youth.
Our Youth Development model, The 40 Developmental Assets, has existed in our community since fall 2005. We actively seek the involvement and support of community organizations, government agencies, businesses, schools, congregations, and other caring individuals to continue to build a community that consistently cares for and nurtures our young people. The Beacon Coalition and the Youth Assets Leaders, hosted a Youth Asset Leader Community Presentation in January 2008. The purpose of this forum was to identify areas that we would like to work on as a community. The asset areas that were identified by youth as well as community members were Community Values Youth, Restraint, School Boundaries, and Adult Role Models. In addition to those four identified assets, the youth had previously identified Cultural Competence, Positive Family Communication, Positive Peer Influence, Creative Activities, Peaceful Conflict Resolution, and Safety as other assets that are important to the youth of Newburyport.
The coalition has begun to look at projects that will strengthen these identified assets in order to continue to work to create healthy youth. If you would like to be involved in this collaborative effort to support and strengthen youth assets, please contact the Beacon Coalition at 978-463-8977. We would love to hear from YOU!
We have restructured our meeting schedule. The Beacon Coalition will now hold quarterly meetings, ideally we would like two meetings to be to report on our progress and talk about current and future projects (March and September) and the other two meetings will be to have fun and socialize (June and December, or thereabouts). Perhaps a Family Pot Luck, Family Movie Night, or Asset Builder Recognition Dinner, for example. If you have some ideas or would be interested in helping with the planning of these fun events, please let me know. Youth ideas and help are welcomed! Call Sarah Hayden at 978-463-8977.
